Phyllis Henrietta Chick

January 21, 1949 ~ August 22, 2026

Phyllis was the first child born to Albert and Iris (Beattie) Chick on January 21, 1949 in the Stettler Hospital.

Phyllis grew up on the family farm southeast of Gadsby, Alberta. Three siblings were added to the family, and Phyllis leant a hand in raising them. She enjoyed helping her mother in any way and anywhere she was needed. She attended school in Gadsby and then high school, in Stettler.

Upon completion of school, Phyllis ventured to Edmonton in search of work. Not finding much opportunity, her dad told her she had “the end of the week to find a job” or she would have to come home. Luckily, her neighbour that had grown up on the farm next door to the Chick’s worked for AGT in Edmonton, and with Friday approaching quickly, Glenn Reynolds reached out to Phyllis to coax her into applying for a position. She was successful, and with the job Phyllis landed her life-long career in 1967 with Alberta Government Telephones!

As a dispatcher, Phyllis had the opportunity to tell all the men where to go and how to get there! She had a wonderful rapport with all her teammates!

Around 1980, she accepted a transfer with AGT to Red Deer, which was an exciting new chapter for Phyllis as well as closer to home. This was a perfect new opportunity to make many life-long friends! An exciting time for Phyllis was 1990 when she was able to build her own home in Deer Park, Red Deer, which she enjoyed with many great friends and family.

Many volunteer hours were gifted to the Red Deer Hospital Gift Shop, Sunnybrook Farm Museum and TOPS. She was very honored to receive the Mayor’s Distinguished Voluntary Service Award in June of 2018.

She loved travelling with her besties (Diane and Jigs, Hazel, Jean and others) to Vegas, Hawaii, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, several trips to the west coast, taking in all the sights and visiting family.

Unfortunately, in 2021, Phyllis experienced health issues that brought her back to Stettler where she stayed at Heritage House and was surrounded by family members and many old friends.

Phyllis will be remembered fondly for her kindness and great spirit by family, many friends and acquaintances. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Phyllis leaves to mourn her loving family, sisters: Shirley (Jack) Nixon, and children Jacki Woods, Glenn Nixon and Jocelyn Nixon of Athabasca, Alberta; Rosalind LaRose and her children Stephanie Hadley, Stuart LaRose, Shane LaRose and Leadham LaRose of Stettler, Alberta; brother George Chick of Red Deer, Alberta; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Phyllis was predeceased by her parents Albert and Iris Chick; sister and brother-in-law Beatrice Beattie Wilson and Rae Wilson of Dalbeattie, Scotland; nephew David Wilson of Dalbeattie, Scotland; brother-in-law Stephen LaRose of Stettler, Alberta.
