Florence Patricia Marie Carey

Florence passed away on September 16, 2011 in Claresholm at the age of 88 years.
She is survived by her four sons and their families:
Wayne (Maureen) Carey and their families Shannon (Eric), Stephen & Laura, Scott (Debbie), Kaitlin & Marcus
Victor (Barbara) Carey and their families Wesley (Leasyl), Lincoln, Joanna Carey, Taylor, Victoria, & Jonah
Thomas (Colleen) Carey, and their families Melanie Carey, Kyle & Courtney, Dean (Jennifer), Addison, Russell (Lindsay), Ainsley
Brent (Peggy) Carey and their family Ryan, Jamie & Blake
Florence was predeceased by her husband Wesley Carey, her mother Aurora and her father Arthur Fortin, her brothers Roland, Girad, Henry, Normand and Lawrence Fortin and her sister Mildred Stafford.

Florence was born on July 6, 1923, in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan.  She took her schooling at Horse Creek and Admiral Schools.  After her schooling she worked at various house cleaning jobs as well as cooking for crews at the coal mine, in the Scotsguard and Admiral communities.  She moved to Claresholm in November of 1940 to work as a waitress.  A few weeks after arriving in Claresholm she met Wesley Carey, and they were married on July 12, 1941. Together they moved west of Stavely in 1946, where they raised their four sons, and remained there until 1977, when they moved to their home in Nanton.  In 2004 Florence moved to her apartment in Claresholm, and lived there until 2010, when she took a residence in the Porcupine Hills Lodge.
Florence was an avid curler and took part in many very competitive bonspiels over the years.  She loved golf, bingo, and any sports that her grandchildren were involved in.  Florence was as fine a cook as could be found anywhere, and was a fastidious housekeeper.
She was a skilled quilter and seamstress and spent thousands of hours at her crafts.  Florence enjoyed her hobbies, but she truly treasured her close friends, and many acquaintances she made through her projects.

Memorial services for Florence will be held at the Stavely Community Center on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. with Stefan Ulrich officiating.

Honorary pallbearers are Florence’s grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Florence’s memory may be made to the Porcupine Hills Lodge (Sound System Fund), or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

My family is very sorry to hear of your loss, my boys grew up with Ryan, Blake, and Jamie. Florence was like a extra gramma to them, and will always be remembered especially the smile that she always wore.
